It happened several years ago when I was in Tokyo. As a photojournalist, I left my hotel room one Thursday afternoon. Then I entered the world Vs busiest train station. It was around 3:00 pm. I lined up at the Bullet Train ticket center to ask about a trip to Nagoya, about 200 miles southwest of Tokyo, to shoot some photos there the next day. It was then that I felt the ground under my feet moved slightly. I ignored it, and so did everyone around me. Then, seconds later, there was a violent shake. Things started falling to the ground, and signs hanging from the wall began swinging (摇摆)violently. I realized what was happening. I ran for the door, about 60 feet away. The ground was shaking so violently that it was difficult to run in a straight line. My heart was beating heavily when I reached the street and ran for a large park, around which there were many large buildings. The noise was unreal. I wanted to get as far away from these buildings as possible, but in Tokyo finding any truly open space is almost impossible. Luckily, I reached the park safely. I could hear the ground rattling (颤动出声）as thousands of people ran out of the buildings. I stood in that park for at least two hours as everyone else did. During this time, the ground continued to tremble. Some people were visibly shaken. There were a few women crying, people pointing up at the buildings as they shook. Making my way back to my hotel was a long journey. The rail system in Tokyo was completely shut down and millions were trying to make their, way home on foot. When I got to my hotel, I turned on the news. The seaside areas of Japan, especially a few hundred miles to the north, were destroyed beyond recognition (认出). Why did the author leave his hotel room that afternoon? A. He went to ask about a train trip. B. He needed to take some photos. C. He wanted to go to Nagoya that day. D. He considered it unsafe to stay indoors. 6. When the author felt the ground moved slightly, he_______. A. saw many people running out B. realized he was in danger C. didn’t care about it at all D. thought a train was coming 7. What does the underlined word “tremble” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Ruin. B. Shake. C. Break. D. Sink. 8. We infer the earthquake the author experienced________. A. led to millions of deaths
B. C. D.

I arrived home late one night last week. I spent a moment looking up into the night sky. The stars above shone (照耀）brightly. The sky looked really beautiful. I started to think about other things as I stared at the night sky. It hit me clearly that these beautiful stars were always there but I had spent very little time in the past really appreciating them. It also reminded me that we often think we deserve many things around us, being too caught up in our own little world. It is a world filled with busy work and the demands placed on us from what we have allowed to-take up our time. Recently, I was asked to repair a house for a family member. When I arrived, it seemed like any other day when I spent my time doing something I knew how to do. But there was something else that came to mind as I started to work with my son-in-law. I considered it a good opportunity. The opportunity was more than just spending time repairing a house. It was an opportunity to build upon a relationship—to further a bond between two people who are related by marriage but are unrelated through few experiences. It was an opportunity to build a stronger bond, a bond that can only happen when two people are exposed (暴露）to each other ’s skills and faults. It was also an opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with another who wanted to learn. There are many chances to see beyond what is viewed as normal, but we must be able to actually open our eyes and heart to these events and appreciate them. To be in tune with what is around you, you must use the attitude of a child who screams with joy the first time they see a rainbow, hear the pretty song of a bind，or enjoy the beauty of Christmas decorations. 9. While looking at the night sky, the author realized that_______. A. the sky wasn’t always beautiful B. he had wasted his life for many years C. he didn’t know what he really wanted D. he didn’t appreciate things around him 10. What does the underlined word “bond” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Relationship. B. Emotion. C. Trust. D. Respect. 11. While repairing the house, the author considered it a good opportunity to _______. A. learn some important skills B. show others his skills and faults C. become closer with his son-in-law D. earn some money for his family 12. Why does the author mention what a child does? A. Because children know what they really want. B. Because children can remind us of our childhood. C. Because children can enjoy the simple beauty of things. D. Because children actually value family more than adults do.
Nola is a 41-year-old northern white rhino (犀牛）that lives at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, California. She is one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world, and the only one in the western part of the earth. The other three live in Kenya. Rhinos have lived on earth for more than 40 million years, but they are now at the risk of dying out. Hunters illegally hunt rhinos for their horns (角)，which are used for art, jewelry, and decorations. They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, though it is not allowed by law. Rhino horns are also prized as a key part in traditional medicine, even though scientific tests have proven that the horns cannot cure illnesses. Experts say that every eight hours, one rhino will be hunted. Scientists are trying to find ways to prevent rhinos from dying out. In 1975, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo, a program through which researchers have collected cell samples (细胞样品）from more than 8,000 different animal species until now, including the northern white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will gain greater understanding of the species, and will find ways to increase its number. Jeanne Loring works with the Frozen Zoo. Loring ’s research focuses on pluripotent stem cells, which are cells that can renew (更新）and become any cell type. Loring ’s lab at TSRI is working together with scientist Oliver Ryder of the San Diego Zoo to use pluripotent stem cells to try to increase the number of the northern white rhino. Loring said the goal is to start producing new rhinos through this method over the next couple of years. 13. We know from Paragraph 1 that northern white rhinos______. A. can live a very long life B. will die out within a few years C. have become seriously endangered D. mainly live in the western part of the earth 14. What was the Frozen Zoo started for? A.
